Los Cabos, Mexico

View of Los Cabos, Baja California

Located at the southern tip of the Baja California Peninsula, Los Cabos is one of the world’s most diverse tourism destinations. Set against a dramatic desert backdrop and right in between the Pacific Ocean and the Sea of Cortes, it is home to award-winning resorts, championship golf courses, and endless outdoor exploration.

Los Cabos refers to two towns: Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo. Both towns are linked by the 20-mile tourist corridor which primarily runs along the Pacific Coast. The drive can take you from small seaside towns such as Cerritos Beach and Todos Santos to the East Cape where you can find some of the most luxurious resorts and relaxing surroundings. You can also find villages tucked away inland in the Sierra de La Laguna Mountain range.

The most popular beach that is swimmable is Medano Beach in Cabo San Lucas.

Other swimmable beaches include Santa Maria Beach, Chileno Beach, Lovers Beach, and Palmilla Beach. To get to Lovers Beach, you can take a guided tour or the water taxi from Medano Beach across the bay. This beach is great for snorkelling, scuba (Neptune’s Finger) and simply walking along.

Cabo San Lucas is lively and entertaining. The marina is the hub for all ocean activities, including fishing trips, sunset cruises, sailing excursions, whale watching, and more. There is lots of shopping, bars, nightlife, nearby golf courses, and Medano Beach. The biggest tourist attraction here is, of course, the famous El Arco, which you can see offshore or take a cruise around to watch sea lions, pelicans, and other wildlife.

San Jose del Cabo is the cultural hub of the area with cobblestone streets, art galleries, historic buildings, boutique shopping, and museums. There's a very festive town square here which can be easily explored on foot. You can also visit the nearby Estero, an estuary that has fish and bird species.

"East Cape" is where you can find the famous Cabo Pulmo National Park, around 2 hours from San Jose del Cabo. This park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and has a beautiful coral reef perfect for snorkelling and diving.

Los Cabo’s Rocks

Todos Santos, about 45 minutes from Cabo San Lucas, has uncrowded areas, colonial buildings, arts and crafts, and local products.

The town of El Triunfo is about 1.5 hours from Cabo and is a great area to experience local beers, wines, cheese, birdwatching, and a visit to the Cactus Sanctuary.

La Ventana is about 2.5 hours from Cabo and is known as a fishing village perfect for day trips out to sea, surfing, and other outdoor adventures.

Golf is a very popular activity in this region of the world. Some courses have ocean views from every hole and take players through huge sand dunes, groves of cacti, and down to the sea. Currently, there are 18+ world-class championship golf courses in the area.

Sport fishing is another highlight, and you can find tuna, blue marlin, striped marlin, dorado, and roosterfish among many others.

Hiking & rock climbing are also popular, and a must-see is Fox Canyon waterfall and Canyon Mountain.

There are beaches for both expert surfers (like Monument's beach) and beginners (like Acapulquito beach), and even surfing schools.

Cruise ships cannot dock in Cabo San Lucas due to a lack of a large enough dock. Instead, they anchor in the bay and passengers are tendered to shore in small boats, which takes about 5 to 10 minutes. Keep an eye out for sea lions, pelicans, and other animals during the ride.

The closest true beach is El Medano Beach, about a 30-minute walk or short ferry ride. Cabo Dolphin Adventure Park is around a 5-minute walk from the dock.

La Paz is a vacation area with beautiful beaches and relaxation, opposite of the high-energy, activity-driven Los Cabos. To reach the eclectic capital, you can take a tour or rent a car and enjoy the serene two-hour desert drive surrounded by coastal views, the Sierra de la Laguna Mountains, and the rolling desert landscape.
